Evaluation of Infrared Radiation and Occupational Cataracts in Bakeries in Qom Province, Iran

Background & Aims of the Study: Nowadays, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation seems to have a vital role in all aspects human life. However, radiations such as infrared (IR) adversely affect visual system. This study aimed evaluate IR exposure occupational cataracts selected traditional automatic bakeries Qom Province, Iran. Materials Methods: cross-sectional was conducted modern with 306 workers. Demographic data were collected using demographic questionnaire. measurement done Hagner EC1-IR digital radiometer at eye height first last hours workday. The obtained analyzed statistical tests Chi-square, Fisher exact, 1-way ANOVA, independent t test SPSS software v. 20. Results: According results, 16.1% workstations had high level IR, 20.3% workers suffering from cataracts. results showed significant correlation between jobs well tasks working (P<0.05). Also, observed risk level, workstation type, age, experience no difference type (P=0.59). Conclusion: Based on our findings, nearly one-sixth surveyed stations higher than standard limit terms measurement, one-fifth indicated that due long-term bakery it is necessary plan implement effective control measures bakeries.
